Oktoberfest and a mini sauerkraut lesson
We here at OlyKraut headquarters have a soft spot for the Bavarian holiday tradition of Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest and sauerkraut just go together. And while most of our flavors are inspired by traditions and cultures around the world, we, at the end of the day, call our product sauerkraut, the German word meaning sour cabbage.
Interestingly, the Germans can only claim the naming of sour cabbage, sauerkraut, but they were not the first to invent this method of preservation. Preserved cabbage can be dated back to workers on the Great Wall of China, 1,000 years before the Germans ever learned of sour cabbage. And fermented vegetables were probably around before then - we just didn’t take great notes.
So while Germans can’t claim sauerkraut as their own original idea, we will still raise a foamy German beer to the fact these early Bavarians were as excited about sour cabbage as we are here at OlyKraut.
And for those that want to continue their history lesson here are some fun facts about Oktoberfest.
